General Assistance Program
General Assistance provides temporary assistance to a poor or needy person.
Guidelines used are from the Iowa Code 252
- Poor person is an individual who has no property and are unable to work due to physical or mental disabilities.
- Needy person is an individual who has "some means"
All applicants are required to apply for all federal and/or state benefits for which they are eligible for.
- FIP (Family Investment Program)
- HUD (Housing)
- New Opportunities (Energy Assistance)
- Enroll with Iowa Workforce Development
- DHS
- Social Security Disability
- Veterans Benefits
Supply contact information for all the above if they need it.
After all the above was used and they still need help.
Need to fill out an application and bring in other documents like a rental agreement or utility bill.
Eligibility is based on residency, assets, income, and circumstances.
Services we assist in
Basic needs:
- Rent - max is $250, depending on the application and only current month.
- Utility - max $250 and current month.
- They had to be making monthly payments of some kind
- Burial /Cremation = $2,000 max
